Re: New to Replication - Need Help

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi,

I have recently started a new job and 'inherited' a replicated
database with which there are problems. I am totally new to
replication and have been trying to access the folowing for an
overview:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/access/content/repl/replicatio
n.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/support/access/content/repl/replfaq.as
p

I found the links on a reputable site but the pages won't load,
for some reason. Can anyone advise where I can find a good
introduction as I need to get to grips with this quickly as it
seems like I'm gonna have to try and sort the problem out.

Assuming you're using Jet 4 (Access 2000 or later), start from this
Knowledge Base article, which points you to the Replication White
Paper on MSDN:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/190766/en-us

If you're using Jet 3.5, then go to support.microsoft.com and search
in Access 97 for "replication white paper." Be sure to check off
MSDN and Technet for the search (in ADVANCED search).

Also, the Replication FAQ is available for download here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282977/en-us

Though the authors of that paper are reputable developers, it
includes a certain amount of Microsoft-speak that is misleading in
terms of its recommendations. Many of the problems in the MS
documentation are addressed in articles on Michael Kaplan's website
(he was one of the authors, probably the lead author, of the FAQ):

http://trigeminal.com

And the Google Groups archives of this newsgroup are the best
resource for real problem solving. For many years, Michael Kaplan
posted to the newsgroup on a daily basis, and answered tons of
questions that resolved problems that are addressed nowhere else
that I know of.

It seems that the remote users are receiving error messages when
trying to synchronise. . . .

Well, nobody can diagnose that without knowing what the error
message is.

. . . Also, the database is on the company network P drive & there
is an issue with replicas being put on C drives & having to be
deleted? Like I said it's all new to me, so I could really do with
a good one-stop learning resource to get up to speed, if anyone
could help.

Mapped drives are pretty much irrelevant to replication, as what
matters is the local path and the machine name. That is, if you've
got a replica on \\Server\databases\, the replica is known to
replication by its absolute path on the server and the name of the
server, such as C:\Data\Databases\Replica.mdb on \\Server. Mapped
drives don't change that.

However, if you move or copy a replica from a network drive to a
local C: drive, you *do* have a problem, in that you've created a
new replica. But if it stays in place in that new location, that's
not actually a problem, unless your replication code assumes a
certain location for the replica.

Start off with the error message and we can help from there.
