date query

i have created a database to track the progress of projects.
THe projects table holds all the data about the various projects. I have
used a seperate table for holding het status as each project can have a
number of status updates. stored in this is status and date the status was
entered.(these tables are linked using an assignment table)
I want to create a query that brings up the latest status entered for each
project and can't figure it out...
any ideas?????
