The disk drive was about 3 1/2 years old, so it was old enough to go. I do
keep my computer up 24/7, so it had a few rotations on it.
I'm not even sure I want to know why you have a 25 lb magnet on top of your
filing cabinet. I hope you don't have any memory chips in the top drawer.
We have storms here. I am in far north Fort Worth, Texas. It was, in fact,
pretty bad last night.
As far as health goes, I am much better. I got a bad cold that developed
into bronchitis and pneumonia. That part I am over, but it looks like I may
have fibrosis in my lungs. I don't know if a naturopath can do much about
that.
Thanks for posting.

Hi Dave,.
hope your health is better -- if not, I know some GREAT naturopaths and
if you email me privately, I would be happy to pick their brains :)
Hard drive failure ... hmmm, do you have enough cooling? I had a drive
failure and replaced it -- second one started failing as well. Then my
son suggested I needed more fans -- bought a new case with lots of fans
and haven't had a problem since!
Another thing I do now is keep my computer away from exterior walls as
we live in an area with lots of storms -- during one of these storms, a
25-lb magnet I kept on my filing cabinet (exterior wall) lost so much
strength it could barely hold itself up!
at any rate, happy you are back -- we have missed you!
Warm Regards,
Crystal

Well, it wasn't that I didn't have backups, it was the unusual nature of the
failure.
The system kept getting slower, and slower and slower. To cut to the chase,
I became convinced I had a memory problem, So I got new and more memory which
did nothing. Found out the hard drive was failing very slowly, so my backups
contained a lot of corrupt data.
I had to search through all the backups to find good files. In all cases,
some were good and some not so good, so I had to piece it back together.
And, of course, reinstall a lot of software.
