Alternates to Access

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this.
Five years ago I muddled through the making of a database file in Access
(part of Office 97 package) that was basically an inventory of some items
that I owned. I wanted to be able to sort by fields within the tables I had
created. It worked wonderfully... Fast forward to today - I no longer have
that computer and am now running an XP computer with only Works on it. I
have already figured out that an Access file just won't slide into the Works
database file. So, assuming I have no desire to shell out $100+ for Access
for this one little file, are there alternate shareware programs that don't
have to be fancy but could either open/edit my old file or at least allow me
to recreate the same type of database/table combination I had before to use
again. Thanks for any advice.
