Problem getting Access to separate fields of data

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

This is my first time requesting assistance from this group, so please
excuse my ignorance. I am a regular over at rec.outdoors.fishing.fly,
however.

Anyway I am in an IT Management class and the professor gave us an
assignment using "webcomputerassn" to download info into Access. We are to
download demographic information from www.census.gov and create a table that
will provide comparison data between North Carolina counties. I downloaded
the info (dc_dec_2000_sf3_u_data1 and dc_dec_2000_sf3_u_geo), but cannot get
it to separate into fields for use? I was instructed to extract the data as
text files and use the "Delimited" function.

Unfortunately, when I get to the "Link Text Wizard" window for selecting
the delimiter and choose "other" as I was told to do, because the data is in
a ?piped? format? (not certain I am using the correct terminology for this)
I can get no further. I depress the "shift" key and press the "vertical
dashed and forward slash key," as instructed but all I get is the boinking
sound telling me, I assume, that I have chosen an incorrect function.

I have tried everthing a complete idiot would try to get this thing to work,
including trying to contact my professor by e-mail, all to no avail.

If anyone has any idea of what I am doing wrong or why I cannot get passed
the "delimiter" stage, please feel free to insult me and my entire family,
but above all else get me thru this nightmare.

Thanks to all, in advance.
