Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hi, Chris.

Can you please post some appropriate statement once to each newsgroup.

I considered it, but I also considered the following scenarios, which
override the short-lived benefit of a single post in a separate thread for
each newsgroup:

1.) Tom may want to change jobs in the future and apply to an employer who
has never heard of him. The HR person Googles Tom's name and reads the
trash that a troll wrote and signed with Tom's name. Will that HR person
also read my "appropriate statement" posted separately in each newsgroup?
No. The troll's words will be attributed to Tom, unless there's some sort
of "Hey! That ain't Tom!" notification right next to the impersonation that
would make the HR person question the validity of who wrote the trash.

2.) A researcher searches the archive on a topic and reads a thread where
the troll wrote trash and signed Tom's name. Will that researcher also read
my "appropriate statement" posted separately in each newsgroup? No.
Reading the trash will unfairly taint every other post that the researcher
reads that was really authored by Tom, unless there's an immediate alert in
close proximity telling new readers whenever an imposter posts the trash.

There seems no need to post individually to each instance. There are 6
identical posts in this ng, and gawd-knows how many in other ng's. This
amounts, more or less, to spam.

Since you feel that way, I've added your name to the list I won't post a
notification for if an imposter ever impersonates you.

We all know, or most of us do, that Tom Wickerath MVP is very experienced
with
MS Access

I don't think Tom is famous enough that most of the public at large would
recognize his name, or know that he's an MVP, or know that he works with
Microsoft Access, but that's not entirely Tom's fault. His PR firm isn't
very good. If he had a better PR company, Tom's name would be a household
name in no time, just like Camaro is.

I just say, one announcement (per week whilst it
lasts?) is sufficient.

The people who are going to need to read that announcement (which are those
who don't already know who Tom is, but read the trash first) will be very
unlikely to ever find or read such an announcement, unless it coincides with
the trash itself.

As it happens, I have received no such posts, in Outlook Express, as
mentioned
so they must be already filtered and it is not by any action on my part.

Your news server has removed them. I assure you that the trash posts are on
other news servers all over the world. They're also permanently archived on
the Internet, which means they're retreivable by Internet search engines.

Are you worried about <the troll> impersonating Tom, or worried about what
he has to
say?

The troll's impersonations can damage others' good reputations. I don't
read the troll's posts, so I couldn't care less what he has to say, but he
should be using his own name as his signature -- and using his own mouth to
speak with.

If the former, then let him post under his own name?

No one is twisting the troll's arm to prevent him from using his own name
when he posts.

If the latter, then stuff you
(based on what I have read regurgitated at the bottom of Gunny's post,
<the troll>
is sometimes on the mark but with a dearth of usefull detail).

Anyone can read the troll's original post in its entirety in the archives,
despite my posts, so I'm not blocking him from being heard, just notifying
everyone that the words were written by a troll, not Tom.

(Who the hell is <the troll>?

It's a young kid who hates Microsoft, and anything associated with
Microsoft, and any person associated with Microsoft's products, including
MVP's. Ever work with a Microsoft product or write about a Microsoft
product? Hates you, too.

In the ng's I visit, <the troll's> posts seem less
numerically intrusive than Gunny's about nothing more important than <the
troll>, or
Tom's undisputed reputation.

The number of the troll's posts in the newsgroups far exceed mine, but he
has used many different names to post under so you may not have noticed how
many he's accumulated. It would probably be best if you add my name to your
kill file, so that I don't intrude on the tranquility of the newsgroups.
Don't add any of the troll's names to your kill file because you don't want
to miss the profound wisdom this kid adds to newsgroup discussions.

Perhaps it's inherent for Marines to be paranoid?

It's inherent for Marines to always be faithful ("Semper Fidelis"), to stand
for honor and respect, and to protect honorable citizens from attacks. If
you think I'll sit back and ignore a crime being committed against a good,
honest, and decent friend of mine, you're mistaken.

Why would you feel need to defend Tom and not himself? He defends himself
and
Access brilliantly in the sometimes technical spats I've had with him.

Funny you should ask that. When was the last time you saw Tom post in the
newsgroups? He posted in the morning just before he left for work on the
day the troll started his attack on Tom. It appears that the troll, who
lives in very close proximity to Tom, is stalking Tom, because he knew
exactly when to start his online attack, and he even posted Tom's address
and phone number in the newsgroups quite a few times that day.

Perhaps you would pass this off as paranoia if it happened to you, but if
someone other than Ed McMahon and the American Family Publishing Sweepstakes
is in your neighborhood and suddenly becomes especially interested in your
name and your house and your phone number, then your friends and neighbors
should probably take an active interest, because someone appears to be
casing your house.
