Anyone using Microsoft's PDW needs God's help Chaplain ;-)
In the meantime...
I wasn't aware PDW could create shortcuts on the "Desktop" (maybe 2003 can). I
must assume you are using the term accurately. I have found PDW installs
shortcuts in the Start/Program menu, leaving any "manual copies" in the
desktop or wherever untouched.
Still, you are correct, in that once a shortcut is created then it's icon is
retained within the shortcut file and the ico file need not then even exist.
You said you uninstalled the app. This should uninstall any shortcuts created
by PDW (but not others). So any such shortcuts will then be installed anew
with the new install.
My guess is that the shortcut you refer to was NOT deleted, or otherwise
updated, and that's just a fact.
So,

Yes. A shortcut which was not deleted when you said you "uninstalled".
> Where would this be found? In the registry? Where?
-I think it's directly in the shortcut file. For the desktop it's in
C:\Windows\Desktop or suchlike.
-There are dangers in copying shortcuts elsewhere if you expect them to be
updated.
-There is NO update mechanism (I theorise). There is Uninstall and Install if
it's an original PDW-generated shortcut.
BTW thanks, investigating gave me a slightly better insight, for instance I
found the ico file need no longer exist after the shortcuts are created, and
rebooting makes no difference. So it's held in the shortcut file, or in your
case by God.
(hope you don't mind me having some respectfull fun)
