I did not say it was impossible, I did say that for most practical (or real)
purposes, DAP will be useless over the internet.
If you want to start losing your time with DAP - especially (but not
limited) if you want to use them over the WAN instead of a local LAN - good
for you; however, using them is not a solution that I will suggest to anyone
for most problems of data publication/edition over the internet.
The RDS transport layer has been deprecated by MS many years ago (because of
security problems and other issues) and DAP have now be themselves
deprecated in Office 2007. (Only the OWC component is installed with Office
2007, not the design tools, so you can use that pages that you have already
created with Access 2000, 2 & 3 under 2007 but you cannot change their
design anymore or create new one.)
If you search this group with Google, you will see that I've often discussed
in the past the use of RDS with DAP (for example, I've often mentionned the
reference http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa139939(office.10).aspx
as well as a lot of other articles about DAP) but now, they are only a
fossil from the past and you shouldn't teach their use to your students
anymore.
BTW, MS has officially stated the deprecation of both RDS and DAP in public
statements; for example, see
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/mdacsdk/htm/mdac_deprecated_components.asp
or search Google for « DAP, deprecation » or « DAP, security »; so this is
not something that I've come up with on my own.

Ms. Lafontaine is mistaken, if not lying. I have placed Access
databases on the INTERnet for my state's transportation system and
teach students in a college how to do it. See:
How to deploy data access pages over the Internet
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=264080
Ms. Lafontaine should not give out technical advice if she's not
trained.

like
ASP.NET, to put your database online.

Sorry, I've posted this on the General Questions, but I found this
newsgroup
just now.
I've been trying to configure a data access page (created using wizard
from
Access 2003) for online access from any
computer, and I've managed to post it online
(http://jchoi.lanowen.com/data.htm). The data table has two records in
it,
but none of them show up on the data access page. The controls at the
bottom
(previous/next, create new records, etc.) are frozen and are only
displayed
as pictures. The server is not at home so I've been asking my friend to
configure the server for me. It seems that there are no more server
problems
(all the permissions seem to be set properly), since there are no more
error
messages.
I've gotten "internet server error" and "An error occured while tryin
to
access "data". Check to see that the object exists." and "cannot find
file"
errors, but they're all gone now. Now it's just frozen with no values
being
displayed, and no active controls. Does anybody know the problem?
I've tried using MS IE 6 SP1 on Windows Server 2000, and MS IE 7 on
Windows
XP SP2.
Before, if I tried putting "" around the data source in the html code
(such
as: data source="F:\input\database.mdb"), the controls would freeze,
but
now
even when I remove the quotation marks, the controls do not respond.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!- Hide quoted text -- Show quoted
